Shabbat Noa  Genesis 6:9-11:32
Candle Lighting Time: Friday, October 31, 2008 4:43 p.m

A rainbow is a sign of God’s promise never again to destroy the earth by a flood. (Gen. 9:11-17) That was of little comfort to the people of Grand Forks, North Dakota, in April of 1997.  Eight blizzards, an ice storm, spring rains, and an early thaw had relocated their comfortable homes, schools, stores, and houses of worship into a world of water.

Hal Olsen, the disaster relief coordinator for International Aid, immediately arranged to “flood” the area with 8 truckloads of life sustaining supplies.  They were distributed by the Christian and Jewish communities in the region.

One man was deeply affected by this help.  He had been very hostile to religion and had even tried to block a church from being built in his neighborhood.  But when he saw how the organized religious community responded to people in need, he said, “Now I’ve seen the church outside its walls.”  Obviously he could have easily noted, “Now I’ve seen the synagogue outside its walls.”

Jews must not be content to stay within the wall of their shul.  We come to synagogue for encouragement, fellowship, prayer and study.  We must also be God’s partners outside the walls of our shul-to all people.  Unfortunately, there are too many opportunities to heal our hurting world.  Genocide is still occurring in Dalfur.  Too many of our citizens have lost their homes and now live in shelters.  With the down turn of our economy, too many people are going hungry every night.

We have to ask ourselves, “Is MJCC doing enough?” and “Am I?”

A world in despair needs shuls that care.
Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Gary Greene
