A group in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, is developing a “Smart House.” This computer-equipped home can be programmed to monitor the baby, make the coffee, start the shower, dim the lights, and turn on the music.  It senses whether people are in the room and adjusts the heat and lights accordingly.  If the vacuum cleaner is running when the doorbell or telephone rings, the computer automatically shuts it off.

Imagine owning a dream house like that!  You could have a taste of the life of Solomon, who in his day had anything a person could want.  During Sukkot we read the book of Kohellet, Ecclesiastes, and in it his writes:  “I withheld from my eyes nothing they asked for, and denied myself no enjoyment; rather, I got enjoyment out of all my wealth.  And that was all I got out of my wealth.” (2:10)

Remember; however, that when Solomon filled his life with luxuries, he also filled it with emptiness. “Then my thoughts turned to all the fortune my hands hand built up, to the wealth I had acquired and won-and oh, it was all futile and pursuit of wind; there is no real value under the sun!” (2:11)  When he lived for riches and comfort, he ran into the same kinds of problems that put For Sale signs in front of thousands of homes.  Riches don’t turn a house into a home and money in the bank doesn’t prevent divorce, substance abuse, and depression.

Solomon finally came to his senses.  He returned to his principles.  He remembered that the fear of heaven is the beginning of all wisdom, and that a real dream home is any house, no matter how big or small, that is built on the wisdom of God.  In Solomon’s later book Proverbs, he instructs us: “Through wisdom a house is built and by understanding it is established.”

To dramatize Solomon’s lesson in our own lives, we move from our comfortable homes into the Sukkah and read the scroll of Kohellet during the holiday of Sukkot. Applying this lesson, the Sukkah could be the best dream house we ever build!
