Shabbat Balak
Numbers 22:2-25:9
Candle Lighting Time: Friday, July, 11, 2008 8:09 P.M.
A lumber company had placed a number of billboard ads along the highway that
till how to make your house a home. Some picture a remodeled kitchen with
beautiful new cabinets, others a lovely patio. These features undoubtedly
can add to a family’s enjoyment of a house, but they don’t make a house a
home.
I can’t help but think that a loving and Jewish home was the type of home
Bilaam saw when he came to curse the Israelites on behalf of Balak the King
of Midyon. Instead of cursing them, Bilaam blessed them saying, “How lovely
are your dwelling places people of Jacob, your dwelling places O’ Israel.”
(Nu. 25:5). What did Bilaam see? One of the things he saw according to
Rashi, was that the tents of the Jewish people were set up so that the
entrance of one did not face the entrance of another and thus each family
respected the next family’s privacy,
A remodeled kitchen, a new patio, or a new house may give enjoyment. But it
takes a combination of godliness and love to make a house a home.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Gary Greene
