Meet the Rabbi

7th day of Passover’s Torah Reading:
Exodus 13:17-15:26 and Numbers 28:19-25

8th day of Passover Torah’s Reading:
Deuteronomy 15:19-16:17 and Numbers 28:19-25

I chuckled when I read about the pregnant woman who told the story about the time she woke her husband to tell him she was in labor and needed to go to the hospital.  He jumped out of bed and said, “Honey, let’s pray.”  She told him that it was not the time to pray.  It was time to get dressed and head for the hospital.  It was time for action.

I think this was the type of message God gave Moses when He said as the Israelites stood between the Sea of Reeds and the pursuing Egyptian Army.   “Why do you cry to Me?” (Exodus 14:15)  Not long before that, Pharaoh had permitted the Israelites to leave Egypt, but then he changed his mind (vs 5-6)  Wanting to bring them back, he and his army chased after them (vs 7-9)  The Israelites were terrified when they saw the Egyptians approaching. They were trapped at the shore of the Sea of Reeds, with nowhere to go!  God was trying to tell Moses and our ancestors now was not the time for prayer.  Now was the time for action.  According the Midrash, Nachson ben Aminadav, hearing this injunction, jumped into the water.  Because of that leap of action (and faith), God parted the waters and the Jewish people crossed over in safety.

There’s a proper time for everything. (Ecclesiastes 3:1), including a time to pray and a time to act.  When we someone who lacks food and clothes, we must act first by feeding and clothing him and only then pray on his behalf. According to tradition, on the 7th day of Passover, God split the Sea of Reeds for the Jewish people.  I think the lesson of this week’s Torah reading is quite simple but very profound.  Sometimes we need to trust God and take immediate action.

Shabbat Shalom and Hag Kasher ve Samayach,
Rabbi Gary Greene
